STZ-induced type 1 diabetes mellitus model
STZ-induced type 1 diabetes mellitus model
Background
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic clinical syndrome. With improved living standards, population aging and rising obesity rates, its incidence is increasing year by year.
Persistent hyperglycemia causes chronic damage and dysfunction to various tissues, especially the eyes, kidneys, heart, blood vessels and nerves.
Currently, there are various animal modeling methods for diabetes mellitus (DM).
Chemically induced DM animal models involve using chemical agents to damage pancreatic β‑cells, resulting in insulin deficiency and experimental diabetes. Commonly used drugs include alloxan and streptozotocin (STZ).
